Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an alternative to braces that you can use to correct mild-to-moderate alignment issues with your teeth. To begin the treatment, Dr. Liebman makes a 3D digital model of your teeth in their current position. She maps out the projected progress of your alignment with the system that is used to make the devices that you wear, which are called aligners.

Each aligner is made of a durable clear plastic that your friends and family can’t see on your teeth if they aren’t looking for it. With each new aligner, switched every three to four weeks, your teeth move slightly closer to an ideal straight position. You must wear them for 20-22 hours per day in order for your teeth to move without drifting back toward their crooked position.

Dr. Liebman monitors the process with frequent appointments, making sure that your aligners fit comfortably and helping you stay on track with wearing them and caring for them.

What are the benefits of using Invisalign instead of braces?

An increasing number of patients are finding that Invisalign suits their needs effectively and is preferable to traditional or even clear braces.

The advantages of the Invisalign system include:

  • The device is comfortable in your mouth
  • You don’t need to visit the office as frequently
  • Others can’t see the aligners in your mouth
  • You can view the progress of your teeth as it occurs
  • You’re free to remove your aligner for easy cleaning and eating
  • There are no irritating metal components that can injure your mouth

Dr. Liebman gives you thorough instructions so you know exactly what to do at each step of the way. Invisalign is simple to use and doesn’t cause many inconveniences.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

The average treatment time for Invisalign is between 12 and 18 months total. The time your Invisalign treatment takes depends largely on the type of misalignment issues that you have. If they’re severe enough, Dr. Liebman may recommend using braces first, then completing your treatment with Invisalign.

How should I care for my Invisalign aligners?

To help you care for your aligners, Dr. Liebman may give you the specialized Invisalign cleaning system. Brushing your aligners with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and lukewarm water is also an option. Either way, you need to clean your aligner following each meal or snack.
